Description
Potassium Permanganate AR 25kg
Potassium Permanganate AR (Analytical Reagent grade) is primarily used as a strong oxidizing agent in analytical chemistry, particularly for redox titrations, where it allows for the quantitative determination of the amount of organic material that can be oxidized in a solution, often referred to as the “permanganate value” of a sample; it can also be used to determine the kappa number of wood pulp, which indicates its bleachability.
Key points about Potassium Permanganate AR in a lab:
Oxidizing agent:
Its primary function is as a powerful oxidizer, reacting with various organic compounds by accepting electrons from them.
Redox titrations:
Due to its distinct color change during reactions (from purple to colorless), it is commonly used as a titrant in redox titrations to determine the concentration of a reducing agent in a solution.
Organic analysis:
Used to determine the presence of unsaturated bonds in organic compounds, as it readily reacts with double and triple bonds.
Water treatment:
In some cases, diluted potassium permanganate solutions can be used to remove iron and manganese from water by oxidizing them.
